The original AppInventor.org site was an educational site on how to program apps with MIT's App Inventor. It provided free access to the App Inventor book authored by University of San Francisco professor David Wolber, App Inventor creator and MIT Professor Hal Abelson, and Liz Looney and Ellen Spertus, two of the App Inventor developers from Google. It also provided video tutorials and “how to” tutorials for app building A-Z. The site provided the first exposure to coding for thousands of aspiring app creators.
The site’s Course-in-a-Box, which was based on Wolber's USF courses, helped many middle school, high school, and college teachers get a new course up and running within days. As of June 2026, the original appinventor.org has been folded into the App Inventor Foundation and this site. Check out the book and video lessons.
The people behind the original appinventor.org
David Wolber
Professor
Wolber developed many of the tutorials for Google’s original App Inventor site, and was the lead author of “App Inventor: Create your own Android Apps”. He also helped develop the App Inventor version of the Computational Thinking Advanced Placement (AP) course for US High Schools at mobilecsp.org. Wolber and his team of USF students also contributed to the App Inventor tool itself and led the development of the App Inventor Community Gallery. Wolber’s App Inventor work was funded by the W.M. Keck Foundation as well as a multi-university NSF grant in collaboration with MIT, Wellesley, Trinity, and UMass-Lowell.
